SEO reporting that means something
A good SEO report is short and occasionally uncomfortable. A long one is usually long because the numbers that matter are not moving.

The number that matters
Enquiries from organic search. Everything else is a step toward that or a distraction from it.
If a report leads with impressions, ask why. Impressions rise when you rank at position forty for more things, which is not progress anybody can bank.
Leading indicators worth watching
Early in an engagement, enquiries will not have moved yet, and that is expected rather than alarming. What should move first is the number of distinct queries returning your pages, and average position on the specific searches you targeted.
Those are legitimate early signals. They stop being legitimate if they are still the headline nine months in.
Metrics designed to look busy
Keyword counts without reference to which keywords. Domain authority scores, which are third-party estimates rather than anything Google uses. Tasks completed, which measures activity rather than outcome. Traffic totals that do not separate brand searches from everything else.
That last one matters more than it sounds: brand traffic often grows for reasons unrelated to SEO and can disguise a channel going nowhere.
Segment brand from non-brand
People searching your business name were already going to find you. Reporting them alongside everything else overstates what search is contributing. Split them, always.
Common questions
How often should we get an SEO report?
Monthly is plenty and quarterly is defensible. Weekly reporting on a channel that moves over months produces noise and encourages reacting to it.
What should a report contain?
Enquiries from organic, non-brand clicks, movement on the specific searches you agreed to target, what was done, and what is next. Two pages is usually enough.
