Shopify SEO guide
Shopify makes a lot of decisions for you. Knowing which of those you can override, and which you genuinely cannot, saves a great deal of wasted effort.

The duplicate product URL problem
Shopify serves the same product at more than one address by default: once on its own, and again within each collection it belongs to. Left alone, this splits signals across copies of the same page.
Shopify does apply canonical tags, which handles most of it. The part worth fixing is your internal linking, so that your own links consistently point at the canonical product URL rather than the collection-scoped version.
Collections are your commercial pages
On Shopify, collections do the job that category pages do elsewhere. They match how people search and they are the pages most often left entirely on defaults.
Decide deliberately which collections should exist, which should be indexable, and what each one is actually targeting. Automated collections generated from tags are convenient and quietly create competing pages.
Work at the theme level
Titles, headings, structured data and internal linking should be set in the theme so they apply across the catalogue. Editing pages individually does not scale past a few dozen products and drifts immediately.
Apps are usually the speed problem
Most Shopify stores carry apps that inject scripts into every page and are no longer used. Auditing and removing them is typically the fastest performance improvement available, and it costs nothing.
What you cannot change
Shopify fixes parts of the URL structure, and it controls robots handling more tightly than a custom build. Some duplication is simply how the platform works. Knowing which battles are unwinnable is worth as much as knowing which are not.
Common questions
Do I need a Shopify SEO app?
Usually not. Most duplicate what a correctly built theme already does and add script weight. Removing apps improves more stores than adding one does.
Is Shopify bad for SEO?
No. It is constrained rather than bad. Most Shopify stores underperform because of defaults nobody revisited, not because of the platform.
Where to next
